What are Asphalt roof shingles?

Great question! Asphalt roof shingles are the barrier between your home's roof and whatever Mother Nature may throw at it. These elements are typically flat, rectangular in shape, and consist of individual overlapping elements laid in courses. They start at the roof’s bottom edge and work up to the top ridge with each successive course overlapping the joints below. These shingles will provide a protective barrier for your home and family for generations.

Along with providing superior protection for your home and family, asphalt shingles can significantly improve your home’s overall design and perceived value.

We Specialize in Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles have been the premier choice for homeowners since the early 20th Century. They fulfill a need for economical, fire-resistant roof coverings and provide homeowners with an aesthetic product with a combination of beauty, durability, longevity, and value.

The standard residential asphalt shingle is the “Square Butt Strip” shingle, elongated in shape, and available in either a one-tab or three-tab setup. Starting with a base of organic material (cellulose fibers), or inorganic materials (glass fibers), then coated and saturated with asphalt, finished with a surface of ceramic-coated opaque mineral granules.

The saturating process is only necessary for organic-based shingles, with the fiberglass-based shingles requiring a coating of asphalt. The coating process provides superior weather-proofing qualities to the shingles. While the mineral granules offer added protection against fire, they also protect your roof from the sun’s UV rays and give the shingles color.

Different Types of Roof Shingles

When it comes to roof shingle types the most common are the big 3- strip shingles, dimensional shingles, and luxury shingles.

  • 3

    STRIP SHINGLES

Strip shingles are commonly known as 3-tab shingles (because of the cut to the shingle) or simply strips. Strip shingles are the most common asphalt shingle used today on residential homes. They are made from a single layer of asphalt with a very flat appearance that gives your home the look of slate. Strip shingles generally weigh and cost less than other asphalt shingles, making them an excellent choice for a homeowner.

    DIMENSIONAL SHINGLES

An upgrade from strip shingles are dimensional shingles, or commonly known as “architectural” or “laminate” shingles. They are engineered with a dual-layer of asphalt, making them thicker with more depth to replicate the look of a wood shake or natural slate roof which gives these asphalt shingles a heavier feel than strip shingles. Normally, these shingles also offer improved warranty protection.

    LUXURY SHINGLES

Luxury shingles are what industry pros call the “heavyweights” of asphalt shingles. Luxury shingles are the highest-quality laminated shingles available that offer superior protection for your home and family. Apart from being the heaviest shingle on the market, luxury shingles are simply stunning to look at, providing the highest quality, coloration, and dimensionality. They’re the most realistic representation of the earlywood shake and quarried slate roofing.
